| | Wednesday, October 26, 2011 3:01:47 PM | TECHNOLOGY NEWS ALERT | | | Democratic House lawmakers on Wednesday called for Congress to expand its investigation into federal loan programs to include a Bush-era loan to bankrupt broadband Internet firm, Open Range. Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Edward Markey (D-Mass.) asked the leader of the House Energy and Commerce Committee to include Open Range in its current investigation of federal loan guarantees granted to bankrupt solar panel firm Solyndra. They said Open Range's bankuptcy put "taxpayers at risk for potentially large losses." The broadband Internet service provider filed for bankruptcy on Oct. 6, two years after it recieved guarantees of $267 million in loans from the US Department of Agriculture. Open Range's collapse came around the same time as Solyndra, a venture backed by more than $500 million in loan guarantees from the Department of Energy.
