Apple, Amazon report disappointing earnings

Amazon.com posted a loss of $274 million in the July-September period. That's down from $63 million a year earlier.

Apple reported revenue of $36 billion, slightly below expectations. It sold only 14 million iPads during the quarter, well below the 18 million some analysts expected.
