U.S. stocks up 3 percent on strong holiday sales, signs of progress in Europe


U.S. stocks are up sharply Monday morning after a strong start to the holiday shopping season and as European leaders discuss new approaches to containing the region's debt crisis.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 309.3 points, or 2.8 percent, while the broader S&P 500 index jumped 36.5 points, or 3.2 percent at 10:55 a.m. The Nasdaq tech index was up 86.5 points, or 3.5 percent.
